Florists boasts a long tradition. The word florist has been around ever since the early 17th century. It was derived from the latin word “flos” and “flor” which mean flowers. In France, they are called “fleuriste.” In Italy, they are named “florista.”

Florists can be educated or trained formally and informally. Formal education entails enrolling in an accredited floristry course. There are a lot of courses offered by different colleges and universities dedicated to learning the art of floristry. After finishing a certain number of units, you can earn a certificate degree.

On the other hand, some  people learn floristry through experience, hard work and self-education. Floristry can be considered as an art, many families who have florist shops pass their tradition and experience to young florists who can continue their craft and business through future generations.

As stated above, the main task of a florist is to produce and prepare flowers as per the requests of their clients. They are skilled in handling flowers. A little knowledge in biology and botany may be required to understand the development of some plants, how they adapt, their life span.

Furthermore, they must be creative and innovative in their designs. A good design set them apart from their competitors.

Florists must be also trained in customer service as this skill is very integral. You are part of the emotional aspect of your client. You must be able to empathize with their feelings in order to fully understand them. They provide experts advice to client’s variety of problems when it comes to flowers. An experienced florist is knowledgeable not only with the physical aspect of a flower but also on each flowers symbolic aspect. It is also better if a florist understands different culture as it can be crucial in the significance and meanings of flowers.

Other responsibilities of a florist include helping customers choose suitable flowers and plants, making bouquets and arrangements, preparing flowers for  displays and advising clients on how to look after the flowers or plants they buy. Sometimes, it also include delivering orders to customers.
